Teen Therapy in Hermosa Beach

A safe space to explore who you are and who you want to be.

What is somatic therapy?

Traditional talk therapy often focuses on our thoughts, emotions, experiences, and behaviors. Somatic therapy brings the body into the conversation.

You might know that you’re safe, but still feel on edge. You might understand why a relationship affects you the way it does, but still feel your chest tighten when conflict comes up. Or maybe you’ve spent so much time thinking, analyzing, and pushing through that you’re not really sure what you’re feeling at all. Anxiety might feel like tightness in your chest or a pit in your stomach. Anger might come with heat, tension, or an urge to move. When you’re overwhelmed, you might notice yourself going numb, shutting down, holding your breath, or feeling disconnected from what’s happening around you.

In our work together, we may slow down enough to notice these signals and get curious about what they’re communicating. Over time, becoming more aware of your body can help you recognize emotions and needs earlier, understand your patterns differently, and feel more grounded in yourself.

What does somatic therapy actually look like?

Somatic therapy doesn’t mean we’ll spend the entire session doing exercises, movement, or breathwork. A lot of the time, we’ll still be talking.

The difference is that while we talk, I may occasionally invite you to notice what’s happening in your body. Maybe your shoulders tense when you talk about your family. Your breathing changes when you describe a conflict. You feel heaviness in your chest when you think about a decision, or notice your body relax when you say something real.

Depending on what feels comfortable and useful to you, our sessions may include:

  • noticing physical sensations and changes in the body

  • identifying where emotions show up physically

  • grounding and mindfulness practices

  • breathwork

  • noticing impulses to move toward, pull away, shut down, or protect yourself

  • exploring what helps your body feel more settled or supported

  • connecting physical cues with emotions, needs, boundaries, and relationship patterns

Nothing has to be forced. We’ll work at a pace that feels manageable and stay curious about what comes up.
